The name "Gotye" is a pronunciation respelling of "Gauthier", the French cognate of his Dutch given name "Wouter" English "Walter", hence the nickname "Wally". Gotye has released three studio albums independently and one album featuring remixes of tracks from his first two albums. He is a founding member of the Melbourne indie-pop trio The Basics , who have independently released four studio albums and numerous other titles since His voice has been compared to those of Peter Gabriel and Sting. Gotye has said he sometimes feels "less of a musician, more of a tinkerer. As a youth, De Backer displayed a passion for music, learning various instruments, most notably piano and drums. In his teens, De Backer formed the band Downstares [9] with three of his high school friends, including Lucas Taranto who still plays in his Gotye live shows. In , his parents moved into a new home, leaving their old family house in Montmorency , [11] so he could continue his studies at the University of Melbourne where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts.

However, after his last album Making Mirrors released in , Gotye pretty much disappeared in the music scene. Seven years has gone by and as far as the music world knows, Gotye has been pretty inactive. In the years since, and after Tim Heath joined, they have created nine albums. Their last one was released in On May 27 , , The Basics released a live album titled In the Rude, celebrating the band's year anniversary.
