The practice of sampling transformed music more than 30 years ago. Artists began snipping pieces of music that they liked, from either obscure tracks or popular ones, and incorporating them into their own. Primarily used in genres like rap and hip-hop to form simple background loops or spoken-word sections, its use in the mashup genre has resulted in more creative and critically acclaimed end products. One such act whose music centers around the art of sampling is the Danish DJ group Den Sorte Skole , who showcased their immense talent on their third full length album, Lektion III in However, the group was soon reduced to a duo after Jakobsen departed to focus on another project. But this seemed to have no effect on the outcome of the album. Comprised of thousands of samples from more than old vinyl records from 51 countries, the minute magnum opus takes the listener on a musical journey. Considering the size and scale of the album, the tracks on the album are grouped into six parts. The parts have different purposes, like setting the tone of the album, showing their experimental side, taking you on a contemplative journey or a good old electronic shuffle.
By sampling music from all across the world and genres as diverse as folk , psych rock , early electronic music, reggae , classical and all kinds of field recordings they take the listener on a truly unique journey through musical history and beyond. The sound is original, massive and highly enchanting. Their live performances unfold on turntables and MPD -players with tons of samples flying through the speakers. Opposed to other turntablists scratching is only used for extra finesse, as the ambition is to mix the thousands of soundbites into a flawless collage of sound, sounding like it was intended to be like this. Since Martin Jakobsen went on leave from the music in he has been managing Turntables In The Camps - now Turning Tables - bringing it to another level. Den Sorte Skole started out as a hip-hop and reggae DJ crew and soon became the Danish frontrunners practicing the concept of mash-up DJing. This resulted in their first release — the mixtape, Lektion 1 from Three years later Lektion 1 was followed by Lektion 2 from — a more complex mix of vinyl samples gathered from a much more genre-diverse group of music. Though still a mixtape, Lektion 2 became the best-reviewed release in Denmark in and Den Sorte Skole went on several sold-out tours. In January Roskilde Festival challenged the Den Sorte Skole to create an anniversary concert celebrating the festivals year history from to
