PLANTED INTO CHRIST
HOW GOD GIVES THE GROWTH
So neither he who plants nor he who waters is anything, but only God who gives the growth. He who plants and he who waters are one, and each will receive his wages according to his labor. According to the grace of God given to me, like a skilled master builder I laid a foundation, and someone else is building upon it. Let each one take care how he builds upon it. For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. In the global population, there are relatively few people who legitimately can be titled a founder of a business or a ministry; even fewer, a ministry which continues for a significantly long time, such as 57 years. Some begin a ministry and build it into a special work; many, many others water what is planted, and some variously take part in its harvest.
God is the real Farmer, and Paul was one of His co-workers 2 Cor. Working together with God, Paul planted the believers into Christ. Christ is the soil. The context of 1 Corinthians indicates this. In 1 Corinthians we are told that we have been called into the fellowship of the Son of God, and, in verse 30, that of God we are now in Christ Jesus, who has been made to us wisdom.
What does 1 Corinthians mean? Now he is explaining to them, as if to children, why it is so foolish to divide themselves into factions based on which Christian leader they are loyal to. In the previous verse, Paul wrote that he and Apollos are both merely servants of the Lord. God used each of them to bring the Corinthians to faith in Christ, but they should not be the focus of that faith.
